Engineers try to make maximum use of available resources and extend them to new uses. This true of data links such as USB and Ethernet: both were originally conceived as primarily for data, and their potential power-supply roles were secondary, if considered at all. But times change and needs evolve, and the yes data/no power thinking has turned as well.
