Marl International has further increased its surface mount LED lighting production capacity in Cumbria, having invested £500,000.
The new machines are customised to handle PCBs up to 1.2m long – an entire ’4 foot’ fluorescent tube replacement in one go. Capacity is now 80,000 components per hour.
This is in addition to the SMT line Marl recently installed to handle boards up to 600mm long, and prototyping facilities it installed in October 2011, which together cost £270,000.
It has also hired two more design engineers, bringing its total to eight, and is now offering design as well as manufacture, for LED arrays, LED power supplies, and complete retro-fit assemblies, sales director Paul McDermott told Electronics Weekly. “A typical customers is a luminaire manufacturer who wants a plug-and-play LED replacement for an older light source in an existing housing, or is designing a new housing,” he said.
“Marl is unique in being able to design and manufacture LED lighting modules entirely under one roof in Ulverston, where most competitors outsource parts of the design or manufacturing process,” said MD Adrian Rawlinson.
The new equipment is in a purpose-built climatically-controlled mezzanine and consists of: Two i-Pulse M20 SMT placers, two Iemme NeoFlow 20 twenty stage convection re-flow ovens, and custom loaders and conveyers
Marl customers include the Formula 1 Association, British Energy and the British Waterways Board.
