LED lighting: Not all 5630s are created equal

UK LED optics maker Carclo has warned Luminaire makers not treat all mid-power lighting LEDs as equal.

“You need to pick mid-power LEDs in partnership with the optic. You can’t just pick any 5630, unless you are not worried about output quality,” Carlo sales director Ian Bryant told Electronics Weekly.

Lens-less mid-power LEDs are taking the lighting market by storm, and optics are required if these are to produce a defined beam pattern, but with some LED makers there are issues with light output distribution and consistency.

Carclo has just designed a street lamp lens array for mid-power LEDs (pictured) for UK LED lighting firm Harvard, which was on-show at LuxLive in London.
