MWC: Qi wireless power receiver from IDT

IDT wireless Integrated Device Technology has introduced a magnetic induction power receiver for the Wireless Power Consortium’s Qi charging standard that can be used in an 8W receiver with a 37mm2 footprint.

Called P9027, the magnetic induction receiver offers “80% peak system level efficiency”, said the firm. At the time of writing no data sheet or application notes were available to reveal if 80% is mains to battery efficiency – wireless charging is struggling to get anywhere near the end-to-end efficiency of wired charging and no load performance. When announcing the chip, IDT said: “The 3 to 7V adjustable output voltage range is capable of driving a variety of downstream power management ICs”.

Inductive charging requires good physical alignment to get reasonable power transfer and transfer efficiency. IDT has included a proprietary alignment guide to assist with this.

Applications are sought in smart phones and phablets.

IDT is developing wireless power transmitter and receivers for Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), Power Matters Alliance (PMA), and Alliance for Wireless Power (A4WP) schemes. It has a dual-mode receiver compatible with both WPC and PMA standards.
