Liquids scanners at airports reduce hassle for travellers

Taking out your liquids at the airport could be a thing of the past thanks to Oxfordshire company Cobalt Light Systems which has developed a scanner to identify liquid types.

The £40,000 machine, called Insight100, is currently installed in 65 European airports including Heathrow.

The system works by shining light on a liquid which changes the wavelength of the light which helps to identify the liquid.

Ten years ago the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory found a way to identify a liquid through a barrier I.e. when the liquid is inside a glass, plastic or ceramic container.
