is repositioning its semiconductor business as a fabless chip company and using a semiconductor operations platform from Israel-based Optimal Plus.
Socionext was formed last month with the merger of the system on chip (SoC) businesses of Fujitsu and Panasonic.
Both parents had a tradition in operating their own semiconductor fabs, and so the new company is creating a global infrastrcture to support the fabless model.
It will allow the chip firm to manage and measure manufacturing yield and quality at various foundries it uses around the world through early error detection and correction, test operation loss reduction and more efficient yield management methods.
“As a fabless company, Socionext needs to be able to quickly analyze the big data generated from our foundries and OSATs worldwide to contribute to the improvement of early correction and yield recovery to reduce our supply chain costs,” said Tetsu Ozawa, director of test engineering department at Socionext.
Socionext will use real-time data analysis to correlate the manufacturing data generated from their test operations to detect issues in design and manufacturing.
The aim is to be able to shorten the engineering improvement turnaround time across the various product lines.
“The real time, big data analytics from Optimal Plus, will enable Socionext to take advantage of next-generation capabilities such as adaptive test time reduction to create competitive advantages for manufacturing operations under our new fabless model and provide steady, high-reliability products that create greater market value for our company,” said Ozawa.
The main focus for the merged Japanese chip company Socionext will be developing both standard part and custom SoC devices for automotive and optical networking markets.
Socionext has chosen Europe as the HQ for its networking chip business unit.
