Osram LEDs light Roman baths

Achillian baths in Sicily lit by OsramOsram LEDs are illuminating the Roman Achillian Baths in Catania Sicily following a lighting project by the Institute for Archaeological and Monumental Heritage of the National Research Council (CNR-IBAM).

Cutting power from 5 to 1.5kW, the original metal halide lamps were replaced by spotlights containing Osram Oslon SSL 80 and Duris P 5 LEDs, which “offer superior corrosion robustness and can optimally be used for applications in archaeological sites”, said the firm.

Development took six months and involved I2C Electronics and BM Plants alongside Osram, under the artistic direction of the lighting designer Marzia Paladino.

Low glare and colour improvements over metal halide lamps were two of the design aims, and a careful balance between light intensity and colour calibration was required. For example, too much or too cold white light had to be avoided because the baths would not have looked as originally intended.

“With the new lighting of the most intriguing archaeological monuments of Catania we wanted to demonstrate how scientific research combined with new technologies can help to strengthen the dialogue with the public administrations and meet the needs of knowledge on the part of the city,” said Dr Daniele Malfitana director of CNR-IBAM.
