Germany moves to integrate LED lighting manufacture

Osram InteGreat Osram Opto Semiconductors is leading attempts to integrate LED lighting manufacture from epitaxy to finished luminaire in Germany.

“For the duration of the project we will be researching completely new concepts for LED production and allow ourselves to question the traditional paradigms of the manufacturing process”, said project co-ordinator Dr Jürgen Moosburger. “With the new production concepts we want to be in a position to develop both low-cost miniaturised LEDs and highly integrated modules.”

Supported by the German Ministry for Education and Research as part of its ‘Photonic process chains’ initiative, the members of the ‘Integrated high-volume production along the LED value-added chain for large wafers and panels’ (InteGreat) project are:

  • Osram Opto Semiconductors – LED technologies knowledge – Will integrate and evaluate new processes.

  • Osram – lighting company with process expertise – Will integrate LED components in luminaires.

  • Mühlbauer – smart card, RFID and solar back-end sectors – Precision processing of electronics on flexible and fixed substrates.

  • Würth Elektronik – PCB production – Researching ways to connect LEDs to PCBs.

  • LayTec – instrumentation – Analysing process control for LED manufacture.

  • Fraunhofer Institute for Reliability and Microintegration IZM – Researching basic connection principles.

  • Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Systems and Device Technology IISB – Researching intelligent control of production processes.

Planned finish is the end of November 2017.
