ITF2015: Imec initiates ‘intuitive IoT’

At the Imec Technology Forum 2015 in Brussels today, Imec and Holst Centre launched an industrial affiliation program to an ‘intuitive internet of things’ (I2oT).

The programme aims at leveraging Imec and Holst Centre’s expertise to develop, together with industry partners, the building blocks for an I2oT, a smart internet-of-things (IoT) that eill unobtrusively surround us and interact with us as individuals, bringing, it suggests, comfort, safety and wellbeing.

To realise an I2oT, multiple smart sensor networks will connect with each other and the cloud, it says. “The systems are aware of us, our perspective and environment,” it says. Intuitive sensor networks will combine a massive amount of measured data from many different sensors with information from the cloud, and turn it all into relevant information. They will learn people’s preferences, health and behaviour and react accordingly, in an unobtrusive way. These intuitive systems will include ultra-small, cheap, intelligent, and ultra–low power sensing and connectivity, often in a one-chip wireless solution.

Imec and Holst Centre have longstanding expertise in radio technology, wireless sensing, ultra-low power electronics, body area networks, diagnostics and flexible electronics – the building blocks to create an easy-to-use internet of things.

The I2oT R&D programme will use this know-how in global partnerships to develop compact and power-efficient sensor modules, future wireless connectivity and flexible integration technologies, says Imec.

Tthe programme will focus on the development of early I2oT demonstrators and applications, while dealing with the heterogeneity of networks, data fusion and light weight security and authentication.

Companies interested in developing the foundation for intuitive IoT networks are invited to become partners in Imec’s R&D programme or to license IP.
