AppliedMicro is sampling a processor using up to eight ARM 64-bit v8 cores to knock PowerPC and MIPS out of the embedded market. Other embedded processors are to follow next year.
Aimed at networking, storage, industrial automation and imaging, the processors are called HeliX and have been embraced by Cisco, HP and NetGear among others.
“HeliX is moving customers which have been on PowerPC and MIPS to ARM,” Gaurav Singh, vp of technical strategy at AppliedMicro, told EW, “MIPS and PowerPC are fading away. Intel is making some headway. So there will be two architectures in embedded – x86 and ARM.”
The benefit of 64-bit processing for embedded is, says Singh, code density. “Code is much denser on 64-bit than 32-bit,” said Singh.
The first of these 64-bit embedded processors – HeliX1 – has either four or eight cores and is made on a 40nm process.
It will be followed next year by a 2/4 core HeliX2 and a 4/8 core HeliX2 made on a 28nm process.
The 2/4 core HeliX2 is for fanless applications using 8W or less.
The processors are customisable with customers’ IP.
