MediaTek has a 10 core phone processor in the pipeline.
Called Helio X20, it has one cluster of two 2.5GHz ARM Cortex-A72 cores for top-end performance (games and video recording, for example), one cluster of four 2GHz Cortex-A53 cores for medium loads, and one cluster of four 1.4GHz Cortex-A53 cores for light loads.
“Dividing the cores into three clusters provides a more efficient allocation of tasks for optimum performance and extended battery life,” said the firm.
It also has a Category 6 LTE modem with carrier aggregation, and is expected to be seen in consumer devices by the end of this year.
With the on-chip ‘CorePilot 3.0′ heterogeneous computing scheduling algorithm which covers all CPUs and GPUs on the die, power is claimed to be 30% less than “conventional dual cluster architectures” , said MediaTek, possibly refering to its own recently introduced Helio X10 with 8x Cortex-A53 cores.
Other additions include a ‘3D depth engine’ “that allows for a faster shot-to-shot experience in creating complex depth-of-field images” from cameras and facility for a 120Hz display.
An 11th core – and ARM Cortex-M4 – support always-on applications such as MP3 playback and voice activation. “The sensor hub operates on an isolated, low power domain to assist with tasks for better battery efficiency”, said the MediaTek.
