Blu Wireless Technology wants to demonstrate that its multi-gigabit Wi-Fi technology which operates in the 60GHz band will work with wireless charging and it has teamed with chip company IDT to do it.
The aim is to combine a 60GHz WiGig module with an integrated wireless charger. So you can transmit uncompressed video of 1080p resolution, for example, at the same time as charging your mobile phone on the one device.
The challenge is isolating the EMI generated by the induction currents from the 60GHz radio interface.
“WiGig technology uses the 60 GHz band to deliver 7 GHz bandwidth. A synchronisation of data on a portable device that today would take two hours and use up nearly a third of a battery’s charge can be completed, with WiGig, in just 45 seconds and consume only 2 percent of the charge,” said the companies.
Bristol-based Blu Wireless Technology has developed baseband modem IP for millimetre wave communications, which has been implemented on a 40nm CMOS process.
The modem, with associated firmware for the PHY and MAC functions, is aimed at millimetre wave communication applications including ‘WiGig’ 802.11ad and wireless back haul for LTE mobile networks.

Blu Wireless has developed a patented architecture which combines software defined parallel processing functions that are controlled using an Imagination MIPS microAptiv CPU with hardware accelerators for fixed communication functions.
The Hydra baseband device has been integrated with a 60GHz phased array radio front-end in an evaluation and development platform.
