Open source Java firm joins Eclipse community

The aim of establishing open source Java SE as a platform for internet of things (IoT) devices is behind the decision of Azul Systems, the Java runtime specialist, joining the Eclipse Foundation open source community.

In practice this will give the Eclipse community access to Azul’s commercial, open source builds of OpenJDK, known as Zulu and Zulu Embedded. 

Zulu Embedded is being proposed as an open source alternative to traditional embedded Java implementations. It offers standards compliant Java SE runtimes and development systems.

Mike Milinkovich, executive director at the Eclipse Foundation, said: 

“Azul Systems is 100% focussed on Java and Java runtime technology which supports our objective of establishing a Java platform for IoT, targeted at connecting and managing devices.”

Zulu Embedded is available for different operating systems, hardware platforms and Java versions 6, 7, and 8.

Launched in March 2015, Zulu Embedded is already installed in over 2 million devices worldwide. 

Complete, certified builds of Zulu, Azul’s build of OpenJDK, are available as free downloads from the Azul website.
