Now, a $9 ARM/Linux computer for makers

ChipChip is an interesting spin on the Raspberry Pi-like computing from Next Thing Co via Kickstarter, priced at $9.

In most basic form, it is a 60x40mm card with a 1GHz “Allwinner A13 Compatible SoC”, according to Next Thing, including ARM MAli400 video, 512Mbyte of RAM, USB, and composite video out. USB allows keyboard and mouse to be connected, and audio I/O is also there on the board – the original AllWinner A13 is an ARM Cortex-A8-based chip.

Like this, it can be built into things and be used as a computer so long as composite video is sufficient.

To upgrade the video output to VGA or HDMI, you need one of two expansion boards that plug into headers on Chip.

To turn Chip into a portable computer, there is PocketChip into which chip plugs, giving it a 4.3” 470x272pixel screen, a compact keyboard and a 3Ah battery. I/O it lead to the outside to do useful work.

For connection to wireless networks or a Bluetooth game pad, the main Chip PCB also carries a RealTek Bluetooth/Wi-Fi chip.

Software is Debian-based.
