Canadian power transistor firm GaN Systems has raised $20m in series C funding.
Led by Cycle Capital Management, the round included existing investors Chrysalix Energy Venture Capital and RockPort Capital, and new firms BDC Capital and Tsing Capital of Beijing.
“As GaN Systems’ customers launch multiple consumer and enterprise products designed with its gallium nitride transistors, this financing will enable the company to ramp up sales and marketing support for its rapidly growing international customer base and to continue manufacturing line expansion,” said GaN Systems.
The firm is one of several to use GaN to make fast power transistors with low on-resistance, in this case including what it has branded ‘island technology’. Generally GaN allows transistors up to around 1,200V to be made – which is why solar inverters frequently feature in application lists for GaN transistors.
GaN Systems’ list includes data centres (server power supplies), solar inverters, TVs, motors and electric vehicles.
