At 0.6 x 0.35 x 0.35mm, AVX’s sub-millimeter E case 0201 TACmicrochip is the smallest ever tantalum capacitor range, claims the firm.
0.47μF at 6.3V is available with 0.01CV leakage.
Small enough to be embedded in a PCB, AVX is pitching its product against multilayer ceramic capacitors on the grounds of inherent immunity to piezoelectric noise, stability, reliability, and temperature performance.
Applications are expected in wearable medical devices, audio modules, power amplifier modules, and as coupling/decoupling in handheld electronics.
NFC and smart cards in bank cards, SIM cards, identification cards, and access control cards are other targets.
“Thirty years ago, the smallest commercially available tantalum capacitor was the 1206 A case. Since then, AVX has developed and commercialised the first 0805 R case, 0603 L case, and 0402 K case tantalum capacitors,” said AVX’s Mitch Weaver.
Manufacture is on a tantalum wafer process which eliminates the anode wire, lead frame, thick walls to save space.
Terminations are 100% tin, and operating range is -55 to 125°C.
