United Microelectronics' (UMC) application to invest in a 12-inch foundry in Xiamen, China has been approved by Taiwan's investment commission. UMC is allowed to invest a total of US$710 million in the project, with its China-based subsidiary Hejian Technology (Suzhou) contributing US$260 million.
