Toyota is making 6000 patents on hydrogen fuel cell technology available free of charge to anyone who wants to use them.
The move is to push hydrogen cell development for cars and mirrors the opening up of Tesla’s patents last year to promote the development of electric cars.
Toyota’s patents cover fuel cell stacks, high-pressure hydrogen tanks, software control systems and the industrial processes involved in generating and supplying the gas.
“When good ideas are shared, great things can happen,” said Toyota svp Bob Carter at CES in Las Vegas where Toyota is showing a hydrogen-driven car called Mirai which will be on sale in Europe later this year.
The development of hydrogen cars will require “unconventional collaboration” among car makers, governments, power firms and researchers, said Carter.
A record ten car manufacturers are showing their electronic wares at CES.
