PIC32 Bluetooth starter kit

Microchip has announced a PIC32 Bluetooth starter kit, which includes a microcontroller, Bluetooth radio, leds, accelerometers, a temperature sensor, and push buttons.

On board, a PIC32MX270F256D runs at 83DMips with 256kbyte flash and 64kbyte RAM, and includes USB, I2S/SPI, capacitive touch sensing and an 8bit parallel port.

“The kit reduces software development time by offering a free Bluetooth SPP stack optimised for the on-board MCU for setting-up emulated serial port connections between two peer Bluetooth devices,” said Microchip.

Also implemented is ‘PICkit-on-board (PKOB) which eliminates the need for an external debugger or programmer, and there is a plug-in interface for a yet-to-be-released audio CODEC daughter card to support Bluetooth audio.

PIC32 Bluetooth starter kit At a glance:

  • PIC32 microcontroller

  • HCI-based Bluetooth radio

  • Cree high-output multi-colour LED

  • Three single-colour LEDs

  • analogue 3-axis accelerometer

  • analogue temperature sensor

  • five push buttons.

  • PICkit-on-board

Example of the applications the firm sees being developed are wireless: thermostats, gaming controllers, blood glucose meters, medical diagnostic tools, GPS receivers, barcode scanners, and Bluetooth serial adapters.

Support comes through Microchip’s free MPLAB X integrated development environment and Harmony integrated software framework.

The free quick-start package is available today, with an Android application development environment.

It also includes a free software development kit (SDK) with the application source and binary code for Microchip’s Bluetooth SPP library.

“Both are optimised for the on-board PIC32 MCU, and are available today via free download.
