Imec and John Hopkins University of Baltimore have delivered a “game-changer in healthcare” with a chip-based technology called Milab which analyses molecules or cells in bodily fluids, such as DNA, proteins, viruses, and blood cells.
“Milab will bring a revolution in medical diagnostics,” says Imec CEO Luc van den Hove, “treatments will only start if they are needed and will be much more specific.”
The chip will take about 15 minutes to analyse the molecules and transmits the results wirelessly to a smartphone.
It can do a complete blood test, a PSA test or check for specific viruses like ebola, HIV etc.
It replaces expensive medical testing equipment which can take days to deliver results.
The technology will be commercialised by a company called Midiagnostics backed by Flemish investors Marc Couke and Michel Akkermans, Flemish investment company PMV and Imec. Total investment is €60 million.
It will take 18 months to two years to produce an IC to perform the testing and a final product for the market is expected in four years.
