Tesla Motors, famed for its electric sportscars, has announced load-levelling battery for solar homes.
Called Powerwall and based around its Li-ion battery technology, there are two versions: 7kWh ‘daily cycle’ to match daytime solar input to evening electricity use, and 10kWh ‘weekly cycle’ for power back-up.
“Current generation home batteries are bulky, expensive to install and expensive to maintain. Powerwall inherits Tesla’s automotive battery technology to power your home,” said the firm. “Both are guaranteed for ten years and are sufficient to power most homes during peak evening hours. Multiple batteries can be installed together for homes with greater energy needs.”
Completely automated, they can be installed in or outdoors (working from -20 to 43°C) and require no maintenance.
Each is 130 x 86 x 18cm and weighing 100kg, and can produce 2kW (5A nominal 350-450V) continuously and 3.3kW peak (8.5A).
Round-trip dc efficiency is 92%, and a separate dc-ac inverter is required.
