Four years after buying Infineon’s wireless business for $1.4 billion, Intel has bought Infineon’s former wired broadband business called Lantiq which was sold for $250 million, five years ago, by Infineon to US private equity company Golden Gate Capital.
The price paid by Intel for Lantiq is not disclosed.
The reason given for the purchase is the opportunity Lantiq gives Intel to expand its home connectivity capability.
“The combination of our cable gateway business with Lantiq’s technology and talent can allow global service providers to introduce new home computing experiences and enable consumers to take advantage of a more smart and connected home,” says Intel svp Kirk Skaugen.
Lantiq is a fabless IC company with over 2000 patents related to broadband communications and specialises in xDSL with vectoring and G.Fast; fibre-based technologies such as Fibre to the Distribution Point (FTTdp) and GPON; comprehensive gateway home networking and DSLTE systems; ultra-efficient network processors; and comprehensive Ethernet and voice solutions.
Last month, at CES, FTC chairwoman Edith Ramirez warned that 2015 could be the year that hacking comes to the home with people connecting up their homes to the Internet. “Any device that is connected to the Internet is at risk of being hijacked,” said Ramirez.
