LED vendors are now looking to develop niche applications that can provide higher margins, as price competition in the LED lighting market has become too strong. Among niche applications, ultraviolet (UV) LEDs have attracted investments from many vendors because of its enormous market value. The UV LED market has much higher technological barriers to entry, so prices are several tens of times greater than those of general LED products. According to LEDinside, the global UV LED market in 2015 is estimated at US$122 million, around the same level as in 2014. The absence of noticeable growth in market value in 2015 is mainly attributed to the rapid decline in UV-A LED prices (UV-A spectrum is between 320-400nm in wavelength).
