The 68020 microprocessor will live on, with a new package, life thanks to a collaboration between Essex-based e2v and Freescale.
It is now available in a 132pin ceramic quadpack (CERQUAD), pin-to-pin compatible with the original Freescale plastic quad flat package (PQFP).
“This new package option will facilitate the transition from the original PQFP, discontinued in 2010, and enable manufacturers to secure long term production of electronic systems using 68020 microprocessors,” said e2v.
68020 was a popular device for aerospace and defence electronics, and was discontinued by Freescale in November 2010. Following that, e2v and Freescale announced up to 15 years support for it through e2v’s ‘Semiconductor Lifecycle Management’ (SLiM) programme.
E2v has maintained a bank of Freescale-made 68020 wafers, and claims to ship thousands of qualified products each month, to customers maintaining legacy systems.
“E2v’s wafer bank is the only counterfeit-free option to purchasing 68020 microprocessors,” it claimed.
Samples of the CERQUAD 68020 are available now. Qualified production is expected at the end of 2014.
